2012-13 NBA Preview: Detroit Pistons

12. Detroit Pistons

HOW THEY CAN WIN: Brandon Knight (12.8 ppg, 3.8 apg, 3.2 rpg) had a decent rookie year and showed the potential to develop into a solid NBA point guard. Greg Monroe was even better, leading the team in scoring at 15.4 points per game, and rebounding at 9.7 per in just his second year in the league. It’s nice to have a solid foundation at both point guard and center, and Detroit appears to have just that. If lottery pick Andre Drummond can realize his potential, the Pistons will be in good shape. But that’s a huge if.

WHY THEY WON’T: The Pistons are too young at too many positions and too old at others. The fact that Ben Wallace played 15 minutes a game for this team last season tells you all you need to know. There’s just not much game-changing talent on this roster.

KEY PLAYERS:

G Brandon Knight (12.8 ppg, 3.8 apg)

G Rodney Stuckey (14.8 ppg)

F Tayshaun Prince (12.7 ppg)

F Greg Monroe (15.4 pg, 9.7 rpg)

FINAL DESTINATION: For as much credit as Joe Dumars received for putting together the championship contending teams of the mid-2000s, he deserves almost as much blame for letting this roster stagnate the way it has. The Pistons aren’t just bad–they’re boring. It won’t get much better this season.

OUR CALL: 31-51.
