4. Kansas Jayhawks
WHY THEY’RE SCARY: The Jayhawks return budding star Elijah Johnson (10.2 ppg, 3.5 apg), who just may be ready to challenge for Big 12 Player of the Year honors. Big man Jeff Withey made great strides last season, and and should continue to develop on the offensive end. Glue guys Travis Releford and Kevin Young return as wily seniors, and oh yeah, KU landed one of the best classes in the country with forwards Perry Ellis (6-8, 225 pounds) Jamari Taylor (6-8, 215) and guard Rio Adams (6-3, 180) all expected to contribute major minutes.
WHAT SCARES US: Thomas Robinson was the engine that made the Jayhawks go last season, and now he’s gone to Sacramento. Tyshawn Taylor, though much-maligned, will also be missed.
FINAL DESTINATION: Kansas has won eight straight Big 12 championships. The Jayhawks don’t rebuild. They reload with a fresh set of heat-seeking missiles. No one expected Kansas to be anywhere near the national title game at this point last season, and yet there they were on Monday night. KU has enough returning talent to be dangerous again, and if you bet against Bill Self, don’t bet the house.
