2012-13 NBA Preview: Philadelphia 76ers
- Updated: October 15, 2012
4. Philadelphia 76ers
HOW THEY CAN WIN: Philly swapped Andre Iguodala for Andrew Bynum in a risky but calculated move that gives the Sixers the size to compete in the East. If Bynum can stay healthy, he could end up being a perennial All-Star in Philadelphia, where he will be asked to play a bigger role. The Sixers also added Jason Richardson (11.6 ppg), who brings experience and a floor-stretching three-point threat. Point guard Jrue Holiday (13.5 ppg, 4.5 apg) is solid, but he and Evan Turner must step up to fill the voids left by Iguodala and Lou Williams, who was Philly’s go-to guy in the clutch.
WHY THEY WON’T: There’s just not enough talent here for Philly to topple Miami (or maybe even Boston). The offseason moves were risky, and could prove disastrous if Bynum or Richardson get hurt. The loss of Lou Williams might prove to be the toughest.
FINAL DESTINATION: The Sixers’ shakeup comes one year after advancing to Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semis. Still, it was necessary because that was pretty much Philly’s ceiling. Doug Collins will get the most out of this team, but the ceiling still it won’t be enough to unseat Miami.
OUR CALL: 48-34.
