2012-13 NBA Preview: Phoenix Suns
- Updated: October 19, 2012
13. Phoenix Suns
HOW THEY CAN WIN: Someone is going to need to step in and adequately fill the starting point guard role, with Steve Nash now in L.A. First-round pick Kendall Marshall was spectacular at times in college and has the chance to be a solid point guard in the NBA. Goran Dragic has been learning from Nash for years and showed flashes of brilliance as his backup. The addition of Luis Scola (15.5 ppg, 6.5 ppg) gives Phoenix some scoring punch, and the go-to guy it desperately needed without Nash. There are some other solid pieces here, too, with Channing Frye, Marcin Gortat, and Jared Dudley.
WHY THEY WON’T: Even though they only got rid of one guy, it feels like the Suns have blown things up and started over. You can’t underestimate the loss of Nash, who was absolutely the heart and soul of this club.
FINAL DESTINATION: The Suns won’t shine as bright without Nash (sorry, we had to) but there’s enough talent here to avoid the Western Conference basement.
