2012-13 NBA Preview: San Antonio Spurs
- Updated: October 21, 2012
4. San Antonio Spurs
HOW THEY CAN WIN: It’s getting increasingly difficult to describe how the Spurs are getting it done, but they’re still getting it done. Gregg Popovich is quite possibly the best coach in basketball, and San Antonio slugs it out on the defensive end every night. Tony Parker (20.1 ppg, 6.8 apg) was MVP-good last year, Tim Duncan (17.4 ppg, 9.4 rpg) is still ridiculously consistent, and the young guns like Kawhi Leonard (pictured) have filled the roles that guys like Bruce Bowen used to play. Manu Ginobili (14.4 ppg) remains one of the game’s best players, and is the Spurs’ go-to guy down the stretch in games.
WHY THEY WON’T: At some point, you’d figure that age would slow this team down but, like the Celtics, the Spurs just keep finding a way. Eventually it will catch up with them…will this be the year?
FINAL DESTINATION: The Spurs have three great players, tremendous depth, and maybe the best coach in the league. They advanced to the Western Conference Finals and took a 2-0 lead on the Thunder before falling apart last season. Don’t think that collapse won’t motivate them this year.
OUR CALL: 54-28.
