NCAA Tournament Predictions: 2. Georgetown vs. 15. Florida Gulf Coast
- Updated: March 18, 2013
2 Georgetown (25-6, 14-4 Big East)-National Player of the Year candidate Otto Porter leads the Hoyas, who stormed into the Big East tournament as winners of 14 of 15 in one of the nation’s toughest conferences. Porter leads the Hoyas in scoring (16.3 points per game), and rebounding (7.4 per). He’s also percentage points away from the team lead in assists (2.7).
Porter has some help in guard Markel Starks (12.5 ppg) and Greg Whittington (12.1 ppg, 7.0 rpg). Few teams in the nation are hotter, and despite what Thomas Jefferson thinks in that Coke Zero commercial, their freshman point guard is not a disaster. D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera has shown incredible poise and decision making in running the Hoyas’ complex offense.
KEY STATS:
65th Field Goal Percentage (.456)
48th Assists Per Game (14.8)

15 Florida Gulf Coast (24-10, 13-5 Atlantic Sun)-The Eagles won the Atlantic Sun by defeating Mercer on its home court in the conference title game. FGCU also owns an impressive and head-scratching win over Miami early in the season. They thoroughly dominated the Canes in that game, outscoring them 40-14 in the paint and pulling away for a 63-51 win.
The Eagles also hung in there with Iowa State (losing 83-72) and St. John’s (79-68) on the road. The school was established in 1997, and the Gulf has only been NCAA Tournament eligible for two seasons. Things that are older than FGCU: Justin Bieber, my grandma’s cat, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, and Jerry Stackhouse’s NBA career. The sweet-dreaded Sherwood Brown leads the team in scoring at 15.3 ppg; he also pulls down 6.4 boards per game. Bernard Thompson (14 ppg, 4.4 rpg) is another player to watch.
KEY STATS:
53rd Points Per Game (73.1)
51st Field Goal Percentage (.460)
PREDICTION: Georgetown
