Ivy League Roundup: Penn, Princeton win big, BC downs Dartmouth
- Updated: January 14, 2018
There was a pair of league games, with one Ivy team playing out of conference, and three (Harvard, Yale and Brown) not scheduled, as the week came to a close on Saturday. In the two that counted in the standings, the home court continued to dominate, with the host teams now having won all seven games so far.
Penn 77, Columbia 71
At the Palestra, AJ Brodeur and Ryan Betley combined for 50 points, but Penn (12-5, 3-0) needed to close out the game with 10 straight foul shots to defeat pesky Columbia, 77-71. The victory enabled the Quakers to remain unbeaten and in sole possession of first place in the Ivy League.
Brodeur scored 30 points, with six 3-pointers. He had 22 in the first half. Betley’s 20 included four crucial free throws in the final 15 seconds.
Columbia, one night after being blown out at Princeton, pulled to 71-69 with 39.5 seconds remaining. Mike Smith scored 27 points to lead the Lions (3-12, 0-2). He had eight in the final 1:38.
Brodeur’s 3-pointer had given the Quakers a 33-28 halftime lead and they built their advantage to 13 before Columbia made it close.
A good measure of just how good the Quakers are should be determined by their next two games, which will be against fellow Philadelphia area powers Temple and St. Joseph’s.
Princeton 91, Cornell 54
Flashing its traditional form at its intimidating Jadwin Gymnasium, Princeton blasted Cornell, 91-54, to complete a home sweep and stay in fourth place in the early stages of the Ivy League race.
The Tigers (9-8, 2-1), who lost their opener at Penn, began the game by scoring the first 19 points and by the intermission led by a whopping 54.
Devin Cannady, one of the stars from last season’s league champions, scored 20 points in 26 minutes of floor time. As a team, Princeton shot 53.5 percent (38 of 71). Coach Mitch Henderson trotted out eleven players off the bench. Of the 16 who saw action, 12 scored.
Matt Morgan had 16 points to lead Cornell (6-9, 0-2).
Boston College 86, Dartmouth 72
In out of conference play, Dartmouth (4-10, 0-1) stayed with Boston College (12-6) for the entire first half, before losing to the Eagles, 86-72, Saturday afternoon before an announced 4,953 at Chestnut Hill, Mass.
The Big Green held Ky Bowman scoreless until he hit an off-balance “3” from the top of the key to break a tie and give the Eagles a 41-38 lead at halftime. He finished with 19.
“They (Dartmouth) were doing a good job corralling him and not letting him make plays,” said BC coach Jim Christian.
Dartmouth coach David McLaughlin commented that Bowman “knows who he is as a player.”
Boston College was coming off a 30-point ACC trouncing at No. 20 North Carolina.
Ian Sistare led Dartmouth with 14 points.
The two programs are hardly strangers, having played 31 times going back to the 1904-05 season. BC has a 22-9 edge in the series.
Dartmouth resumes Ivy competition next Saturday hosting its travel partner, Harvard, which won by 10 points in Cambridge last week.
