Yale 74 Dartmouth 64

Bouncing back from a disheartening loss to Harvard 24-hour earlier, Yale (9-11, 2-2) kept Dartmouth (4-12, 0-4) the only winless team in the Ivy League with a 74-64 win before 1,384 at its John J. Lee Amphitheater in the Payne Whitney Gymnasium.

Sophomore Alex Copeland, weakened this week with the flu, still scored 25 points to lead the Bulldogs. Trey Phills (17) and Miye Oni (15) were also in double figures for Yale. Taylor Johnson topped the Big Green with 15.

Dartmouth led in the early stages but Yale took a 36-31 advantage into the intermission.

Yale broke a two-game Ivy losing streak and is now tied for fourth place with Brown, 2-2.

Harvard 86 Brown 77

Harvard (9-10, 4-0) took over sole possession of first plac, beating host Brown, 86-77, at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Sophomore Seth Towns had a career high 30 points. Bryce Aiken, working his way back from an injury, tallied 18.

Desmond Cambridge, a freshman, scored 22 for the Bears.

For the second straight game the Crimson got off to a hot start, scoring the first 13 points. Brown battled back, as did Yale on Friday, to trail by just four at half, then came to within two but never led.

The Crimson have now won 17 straight over Brown since 2009.

Cornell 82 Columbia 81

Cornell (7-10, 1-3) picked up its first Ivy League win of the season, defeating Columbia (5-12, 1-3) 82-81 on its home floor in Ithaca, NY. An 8-0 run put the Big Red ahead, 69-64, with 5:24 remaining and Matt Morgan’s free throws with three seconds left were the clincher. Columbia’s Gabe Stefanini made a 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Lions fell one point short.

Morgan was the top scorer with 29 points and now has 40 consecutive double-figure games, a Cornell record. Teammate Stone Gettings had 25. Morgan.

Penn 67 St. Joseph’s 56

Pennsylvania (13-6, 3-0) held off Big Five rival St. Joseph’s (9-11, 4-4) of the Atlantic 10 Conference, 67-56, before 7,682 at the Palestra. The Big Five consists of the Division 1 programs in and around Philadelphia.

Penn is now 12-0 when leading at the half. Although the Quakers were in front in this game at intermission, 33-30, the Hawks then pulled ahead, 37-35. But Penn took the lead back with a 9-0 run and kept at least a four-point advantage the rest of the way.

AJ Brodeur had a double-double (13 points and 11 rebounds) and Darnell Foreman made four free throws in the last 30 seconds to close it out for the Quakers. Shavar Newkirk of St. Joseph’s had 19 points. Perhaps the most amazing statistic of the game is that Penn’s bench outscored the Hawks 19-0.

Penn has now won four of its last five. Its only loss in that stretch was to Temple a week ago in another Big Five contest.
