Ivy League Roundup: Despite Mason’s return, Harvard cruises past Yale

Harvard 64, Yale 49
Makai Mason, made his first appearance in the better part of two seasons but his Yale Bulldogs lost to Harvard (9-1) which maintained its first-place tie with Penn. The Yale captain scored eight points in 21 minutes off the bench. Chris Lewis had 18 for the Crimson, who led by 20 at the half. The Bulldogs closed to within nine with 13:32 left. Yale (5-5) still holds third place, a game ahead of Cornell, Columbia and Brown, all 4-6. Yale outscored Harvard 33-28 in the second half, but it was too little, too late. 1,636 braved a snowstorm in packing Harvard’s bandbox gym.
Penn 79, Cornell 71
Penn (9-1), as did Harvard, clinched a berth in the Ivy League tournament, defeating Cornell before 2,283 on the losers’ court. Ryan Betley hit six 3-pointers among his career-high total of 23 points as AJ Brodeur added 21. The Quakers’ largest lead was 13. Cornell closed to within five with a minute remaining.
Columbia 85, Princeton 60
Princeton remains the enigma of the Ivy League, losing at Columbia before 1,831. The defending champions and pre-season tri-favorite are now 3-7 and just one game ahead of last-place Dartmouth. Kyle Castin (22) and Lucas Meisner (15) were high for the Lions. Princeton’s best was only 12 points from Amir Bell.
Dartmouth 66, Brown 63
Dartmouth, which lost its first seven games, is now 2-8. Chris Knight had 18 and Taylor Johnson and Miles Wright each 15. Brown (4-6) is tied with Cornell and Columbia for fourth place.The game was attended by 767 in Hanover.
