2015 NBA Draft Profile: Delon Wright
- Updated: May 24, 2015
Delon Wright
6-5, 190 lbs.
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
College: Utah
Class: Senior
Dorrell Wright’s little brother made a name for himself last season as the best player on a renaissance Utah squad that won 26 games and advanced to the Sweet 16. Delon did everything for the Utes, scoring 14.5 points, dishing out 5.1 assists and pulling down 5 boards per game. The 6-5 guard brought the ball up on offense, defended the other team’s best player, and took the big shots come crunch time. He was so impressive that our own Kels Dayton voted for him as a first-team All-American (quite the honor, we know).
In the NBA, Wright will play point guard, though that wasn’t his only position in Salt Lake City. He’s got the quickness, reach and decision-making skills to be successful at the ‘1’, but it’s never easy to transition from being a combo guard in college to the guy being entrusted with the keys to an NBA car.
Wright is incredibly efficient offensively, as he shot 50% from the field last season (down from 56% in 2013-14). He will have to improve on 35% shooting from three-point range, but that shouldn’t be much of a problem once he’s getting everyday shooting instruction.
Though he’s a little on the slight side, Wright has got the potential to be an impact player on defense. His size is ideal for playing passing lanes, he’s quick enough to pick up smaller guards, and showed great defensive instincts, averaging 2.5 steals per game as a junior.
Delon should be a late-first round pick, with teams like Dallas, Memphis and the L.A. Lakers (27th pick, from Houston) in the mix for him.
