Last Night in College Hoops: Kansas beats Oklahoma in 3OT, UNC’s Brice Johnson joins exclusive list
- Updated: January 5, 2016
As you probably saw if you’re a college hoops fan, No. 1 Kansas beat No. 2 Oklahoma, 109-106, in triple overtime on Monday night. The Jayhawks are incredible at home, regardless of the year, opponent, roster, anything.
Bill Self improved to 198-9 on James Naismith Court in his career. Ridiculous.
If Kansas could play in the NCAA Tournament at Allen Fieldhouse, they’d probably have 25 national championships. So, it says something about Oklahoma that the Sooners were able to not only hang around for three overtimes, but nearly pull off one of the biggest regular-season wins in their program history.
OU is the real deal, a legit national contender and worthy of their No. 1 ranking in the coaches’ poll.
Buddy Hield, the Sooners’ outstanding senior shooting guard, put up an opponent-record-tying 46 points on 13-of-23 shooting and 8-of-15 from deep. He’s now averaging 26.3 points per game, which ranks second in the nation.
Hield, 22, is projected as a top-10 pick in next year’s NBA Draft.
But Hield may not have even had the best performance in college hoops on Monday night. That honor could go to North Carolina forward Brice Johnson, who put up a Wilt Chamberlain-like (or at least Andre Drummond-like) 39 points and 25 rebounds in a 106-90 win over Florida State:
Johnson joins Kevin Durant and Blake Griffin as the only guys in history to put up stat lines like that in college.
Also noteworthy is the fact that Buzz Williams’ Virginia Tech squad upset No. 4 Virginia in Blacksburg, 70-68. The Hokies led throughout. They’re now 10-5, and although they don’t have much of an NCAA Tournament profile outside of the UVA win (also just beat NC State), the Hokies will have plenty of opportunities in the rugged ACC.
Oh, and after the game, Buzz Williams tweeted something about tea.
Keep doing you, Buzz.
