Ivy League Roundup: Harvard keeps pressure on Penn

Harvard 66 Princeton 51

Harvard (6-1) continued to keep the pressure on Ivy League leading Penn (7-0) by handing Princeton (3-4) its third straight loss, 66-51. The Crimson will have an opportunity to gain a first place tie when it faces Penn late Saturday afternoon.

A 23-3 run to close the first half gave Harvard a 35-20 lead, its eventual margin of victory after the Tigers had cut their deficit to eight. Christian Juzang scored a career-high 20 points for the winners. Nobody on Princeton made it to double figures.

Harvard has won five of its last six games.

The tightly bunched conference now has five teams tied for third place at the midway point in the schedule. The game, at Harvard’s small gym, brought out an attendance of 1,636.

Penn 64 Dartmouth 61

At Hanover, N.H., Penn (7-0) managed a 64-61 victory over hard luck Dartmouth (0-7), as the Quakers remained the only undefeated team in the league, forcing the Big Green to remain without a win.

Once again Dartmouth stayed with its opponent for most of the game, leading 55-51 with 4:37 left, requiring Penn to finish on a 13-6 run. Miles Wright scored 16 for the Big Green which has lost 10 straight and four of its last five by single digits.

AJ Brodeur had 20 points and10 rebounds for Penn.

Yale 88 Columbia 84

Breaking a two-game losing skid, Yale gained a difficult 88-84 home court decision over Columbia, leaving both teams with identical 3-4 records.

Columbia trailed twice by two points in the last 18 seconds, but Yale’s Alex Copeland kept his team in front with a pair of free throws each time.

Yale had five in double figures, topped by Miye Oni who had five 3-pointers, 17 points, and six assists. The Bulldogs had 27 assists on 31 field goals. Gabe Stefanini of the Lions also scored 17.

Columbia led 47-45 at the half before the Bulldogs pulled in front by 11.The game, attended by 1,084, had to compete for fans, especially students, with the Quinnipiac-Yale hockey contest, which attracted a sellout crowd in New Haven.

Cornell 78 Brown 60

Cornell brought Brown back to earth, defeating the Bears in Providence, R.I., 78-60, after Brown had upset Princeton in its previous game. Cornell and Brown are now both 3-4.

Brown’s freshman Desmond Cambridge with 26 points had his sixth game of the season with 20 or more, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the big Red which has now won three of its last four.

Stone Gettings’ double-double led Cornell with 23 points and 10 rebounds.

The visitors led 47-35 at the half, went on a 10-4 run to start the second and were never headed. The attendance was 780.
