WHY THEY’RE SCARY: 6-7 senior forward Elias Harris looks like a favorite for WCC Player of the Year, and could become just the second Zag in history to score 2,000 points and pull down 1,000 rebounds. The backcourt of Kevin Pangos (13.6 ppg, 3.4 apg) and Gary Bell Jr. should be one of the league’s best, and junior center Sam Dower has a chance to emerge in Robert Sacre’s absence. David Stockton and Kyle Dranginis will provide plenty of offensive punch off the bench.
WHAT SCARES US: Aside from Harris, the Zags are devoid of a go-to scorer who can go toe-to-toe with the big boys in the BCS conferences. The talent pool isn’t as deep as it has been in recent years, so head coach Mark Few must rely on big contributions from several newcomers who may not be ready to shoulder the load.
FINAL DESTINATION: The Zags haven’t been able to break through the Sweet 16 ceiling since 2006, and this probably isn’t the team that’s going to do it. Chalk up another tourney appearance, and then roll the dice.
