16. Memphis Tigers
By: Kels Dayton
WHY THEY’RE SCARY: Point guard Joe Jackson has the potential to make the leap to conference Player of the Year. Chris Crawford is a talented three-point shooter who can bust open games, and Tarik Black is a load inside (6-8, 243 pounds). Memphis has plenty of depth on the perimeter, with four guys who could see much PT.
WHAT SCARES US: Will Barton and his 18 points and 8 rebounds per game are gone, and that leaves the Tigers without a go-to scoring option. This is also a small, physically unimposing team that is going to have to win with speed. Tarick Black should be a more imposing force than he has shown inside, and Antonio Barton needs to step up in the absence of his brother. This group was the No. 1 ranked recruiting class coming out of high school, but has not played up to that potential thus far in their college careers.
FINAL DESTINATION: Memphis has had highly-rated teams in the past few years, but this program has not been the same since John Calipari left. Someone (Joe Jackson, Tarik Black, Chris Crawford) is going to have to step up to the plate if the Tigers plan on being able to compete with the big boys.
