SMU Mustangs (23-9, 12-6 AAC)-What a year it’s been for the Mustangs, who earned their first NCAA Tournament berth since 1993. Head coach Larry Brown has worked his Hall of Fame magic in a place where basketball wasn’t even an afterthought.

As you’d expect from a Larry Brown team, the Mustangs are led by great guardplay. Sophomore guard Nic Moore has benefited greatly from Brown’s arrival, and he keys the offense, leading the team in scoring at 13.7 per. He also puts up 4.8 assists per game.

6-9 sophomore forward Markus Kennedy (12.1 ppg, 6.9 rpg) is also an offensive threat. But the Mustangs win games with defense. They allow opponents to shoot just 37.7 percent from the field, which is paltry.

SMU was 7-8 this season in road or neutral games, and 14-1 at home. They lost to Houston in the first round of the AAC tournament.

KEY STATS:

21st Points Allowed Per Game (62.3)

16th Points Allowed Per Possession (0.93)

3rd Opponents’ Field Goal Percentage (37.7)
