Yale’s Miye Oni declaring for NBA Draft; hiring agent

Yale junior Miye Oni is declaring for the NBA draft and hiring an agent, according to a report on March 29th by Jonathan Givony of ESPN.

“I plan on entering the 2019 draft,” Oni told ESPN in a text message. “I did the Undergraduate Advisory Request to legally protect myself and my eligibility, but I have every intention of staying in the draft.”

The agent will be Harrison Gaines of SLASH Sports, who like Oni, is an Ivy Leaguer having played at Penn. The draft is due to start on June 20th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Although continuing to attend classes at Yale, Oni will be training with Joe Abunassar and his longtime personal trainer, Jonathan Kelley, in preparation for the draft. Oni said, “I believe I will surprise NBA teams with my versatility. I have the ability to play 1, 2 and 3 offensively and defensively. I can run the pick-and-roll, shoot off the dribble, shoot off the catch and defend multiple spots. Whatever a team needs I will do.”

Oni could remove himself from the draft and maintain college eligibility if he withdraws within ten days after the NBA combine in mid-May.

Yale coach James Jones said that if Oni’s evaluation is anywhere from 45 to 60, it would probably mean playing in the G (for Gatorade) League, in which case he believes it would be better for him to stay at Yale and graduate in his normal time.” He is currently ranked No. 53 among ESPN’s top 100 prospects for this summer’s draft.

Without being specific, Oni said “I have made arrangements to complete my degree if I indeed do leave Yale early.”
