OJ Mayo Says DeMarcus Cousins Has “Mental Issues”

O.J. Mayo thinks DeMarcus Cousins has “mental issues.” He ain’t the only one.
After he was hit in the man region with a Reggie Evans-like cheap shot in the second quarter of last night’s 119-96 beatdown of the Kings, Mayo spoke out about Cousins’ lack of maturity and punk attitude (my words, not his). It’s not the first time Cousins has been called out for his immaturity, and it certainly won’t be the last.
DeMarcus was suspended for two games earlier this season for a ridiculous confrontation with Spurs broadcaster Sean Elliot , and he basically got Paul Westphal fired last season.
“Man, that guy has mental issues,” Mayo told the Dallas Morning News . “He is a talented player. He has the opportunity to be the face of the organization, but I don’t think he wants it.”
“Big maturity problem,” Mayo said. “Hopefully he’ll grow out of it and become great.”
“I told [Cousins], man, play basketball. You’ve got a chance to be a good player, but when you do stuff like that, you’re a garbage player. It’s not a sign of being great.”
Mayo even reported the incident to the referees so that they could review it at halftime. He said he thinks that the offense could be cause for suspension.
Mavs coach Rick Carlisle yelled at Cousins during the third quarter of last night’s game.
He wouldn’t comment on what he actually said, but he did offer reporters this piece of comedic gold:
“I really like him as a player, and I was expressing that to him.”
Cousins said that the play was unintentional, but his track record is about as pristine as Ndamukong Suh’s. Mayo said it best, he does need to grow up. Cousins’ immaturity is a big part of the reason why the Kings are 7-13 this season.
