March Madness hero, ex-Fairleigh Dickinson guard Demetre Roberts joins Austin Spurs’ G League training camp roster
- Updated: November 4, 2023
He was one of the heroes in Fairleigh Dickinson’s impossible takedown of No. 1 Purdue as a 16-seed in last year’s NCAA Tournament, and now former FDU guard Demetre Roberts has the chance to pull off another remarkable feat– cracking a G League roster.
Roberts joined the training camp roster of the Austin Spurs, the G League affiliate of the San Antonio Spurs, on Thursday. He’s the first former Fairleigh Dickinson player to be part of a G League squad, according to the program’s X account.

Roberts, who’s listed at just 5-8 out of Mount Vernon, N.Y., averaged 16.6 points, 4.2 assists and 3.1 rebounds for the Knights last season and shot 42% from the field. He scored 12 points and had 4 assists in FDU’s 63-58 win over Purdue, then dropped 20 in a 78-70 loss to eventual Final Four participant Florida Atlantic.
It’s a long way from the NEC to the NBA, so cracking a G League training camp roster is a serious accomplishment. If Roberts is somehow able to shock the world again and work his way up to the NBA, he’d become the first former Northeast Conference player since Othyus Jeffers of Robert Morris to do so. Jeffers did that back in 2008.

Roberts knows what it takes to shock the world. Here’s hoping he can do that again. Either way, he’s already doing some main character stuff.
