Ivy Roundup: Surprising Brown wins at Princeton, Harvard edges Cornell
- Updated: February 5, 2018
Four close games, including the third overtime of the weekend that ended in a major upset, was the Ivy League story on Saturday (Feb. 3rd). When the final buzzer sounded, Penn remained the sole undefeated team in the conference and Dartmouth the only one without a victory.
Brown 102 Princeton 100 (OT)
The shocker was at Princeton where Brown upset the Tigers 102-100, behind its sensational freshman, Desmond Cambridge who scored 32 points. For both teams, it was their second overtime game in as many nights.
Cambridge hit on a pair of free throws after time expired in regulation. Then, in the extra period, he notched his seventh 3-pointer of the game with his team trailing 100-98 and five seconds remaining. Another point was added by Brandon Anderson, who had 25 for the Bears.
Princeton, which had defeated Yale in overtime the night before, had five players in double figures, with Devin Cannady’s 27 leading the way.
Penn 59 Yale 50
At the Palestra, Yale was unable to recover from a painful overtime loss at Princeton, but managed to stay with Penn until the Quakers won, 59-50 and remain undefeated in the league (5-0).
Caleb Wood scored 14 points, the highest of four Penn players in double figures. Penn led 31-25 at the half, then pulled out to a 36-25 lead before Yale cut it down to single digits.
The Bulldogs’ 6-10 first year pivot, Paul Atkinson, the only one who has started all of Yale’s 22 games, had a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds.
Harvard 76 Cornell 73
Harvard, victim of a surprising loss to Columbia the night before, had to break a 67-67 tie with 2:25 left for a 76-73 win at Cornell. The Crimson (5-1) remains in second place.
A “3” by Seth Towns with 2:25 remaining, and six Harvard free throws wrapped it up. Towns finished with 15 points but Cornell’s Stone Gettings took scoring honors with 32 points and 10 rebounds.
Columbia 77 Dartmouth 74
Columbia completed a home court sweep but it wasn’t easy, defeating winless (0-6) Dartmouth, 77-74.
Mike Smith (20) and Quinton Adlesh (18 on 6 for 10 behind the arc) topped the Lions. Although Columbia led by 12 at the intermission and 63-54 midway in the second half, the Big Green took a 67-66 lead before Columbia moved ahead 75-72 lead with 1:06 left.
Adrease Jackson’s double-double (24-14) weren’t enough to halt the nine-game Dartmouth losing streak.
Coming Up
A rare mid-week Ivy League matchup will take place on Tuesday (Feb. 6) at the Palestra with Princeton taking on Penn. The league, especially Harvard, will be watching.
